Holy Ads, Batman. Calling out @rjkoehler

Edit: For his part, Mr. Koehler removed the massive ad-blocks surrounding his posts. donism in action.

After clicking through tweets to some posts with a lot of copy and pasting of articles from 3rd party sources, with a few lines of commentary, I came across the ultimate representation of bloggers’ greed.

I will not link to the website for moral reasons, but here’s his twitter account.

The following is a screen shot from a “blog post” — which can only be represented as such with quotations. Doing some math, I have found that this post (with a total of  645,831 pixels) has 42% advertisements, 14.2% Recent Comments links, 0.8% meta, and the kicker…1.8% content (actually a link to a third party again).

Android for Expats: TuneIn Radio

TuneIn Radio for Android and iPhone

At first glance, this doesn’t seem like something particularly related to being an expat (aka Alien) in Korea. But, TuneIn Radio which is both on the Android Marketplace (for free) and iTunes for the iPhone and iPad ($1.99) has proven infinitely useful and entertaining.

However, consider tonight, while I was walking home from work, I was listening to the morning shows from a Toronto news talk radio station I always had on during university and one from my hometown — in real time. Turns out our drive home time in East Asia is about the same time as the morning drive shows in the Eastern Time Zone.

It’s a bit of a surreal experience to get live radio from Canada in my ears while my eyes see Seoul..

Local Seoul Radio on TuneIn Radio

As you can see, if you want to go local and listen to Korean stations or TBS eFM, they also have a “Local Radio” section, which finds stations based on your location. Further scrolling will find every conceivable topic including world news stations like BBC and ABC (Australia), Top 40 radio, and just about everything on the world’s airwaves. At the bottom of the front page is a podcast section, where most popular podcasts are available for streaming.

Donism for Expats

A typical foreigner in South Korea

The same idea that was behind making my information page about Costco in Korea, has lead me to start a section called “Donism for Expats” so I can expand the concept and help out fellow Aliens in Korea.

The second addition to the section is Sindorim Technomart. I have been getting some Google hits looking for the Technomart and information related to it.

2010/5/30 Edit: Today I added an information page on registering with the Canadian Embassy in Seoul. It’s quite easy, actually. Although, it took me 10 months to get around to it.

If someone has a good idea for another addition, leave a comment below. I have a few ideas, including the Yeongdeungpo Times Square complex / mall.
